on board of Nikola: Turkey

Back home at last! I’m back from my trip around Turkey, it’s been some memorable days filled with mixed feelings. On one side I’ve seen paradise, sailing on a turkish catamaran across the Egeo sea, without a doubt one of the most beautiful experiences I have seen in my entire life. I’ve seen the most amazing islands and visited really genuine places, all of it with the best company, my friends! On the other side and oposed to all the idilic was the night of the 15th in Istambul.

We were having dinner at the 360º hotel with some incredible views of the city with some incredible views of the city, the perfect night, all of it until we saw some helicopters going around. The mood and nervousness of the waiters and people was telling us something was off. Soon after they told us to leave dinner and go back to our hotel. I can still remember the walk back to hotel Mambara in the Taskim square holding on to my friend Ruben’s hand. Streets were filled with people, all looking serious and starring at their phones. We fainally all grouped at a room where we followed the attampt of coup. We heard shots, and two explotions that left us breathless, is funny how you react in those situations of fear, I was really scared, specially after seeing my friends were too. Despite everything we managed to sleep for a couple of hours and on the next morning we had to take the decission of how to continue our trip. But we wole up with the terrible news of all the deaths and that the president was at the airport, so we coulm’t catch our flight. That’s why we decided to hire a minibus and drove to Bodrum on an eleven hours trip through the country. When you think those things won’t happen to you, life can always surprise you, as my friend Maria José tells me, another adventure together for our life journal. In it I will right the memorable moments on board of Nikola, the call to my mum when I landed at Barajas or going back to my boyfriend, of course.

Thanks for all the messages of support, I know it’s a bit late but I was trying to find the right moment and way of telling you about it. Thanks for always being there ;)

  2. Wow, seems like a great little trip along with some beautiful and sad memories.
Such a scary little story to read. I heard it immediately on the live news that day too. I am glad you are safe and many lives have lost through this tragedy. :(

  4. I can say that as a Turkish person; this is not the real Türkiye and İstanbul and the other countries. I had the chance to see many countries and Türkiye is a real paradise with all these countries. Every time I see the ugly photos of Türkiye in the forein press and this makes me sad. The story you told here is true but I can say that the terrorism is a scourge of the whole world. For instance, the events in France soon.
